Breaking The Cycle Of Sin

We're Not Bad People, we just did a bad thing!

We're Not Bad People, we just did a bad thing!

“I the LORD your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.” -Exodus 20:5-6

Bloodline is one of the best dramas on Netflix. Those are not my words, but the consensus of viewers of the TV show. I happen to think it is one of the worst shows you could watch. It is horrible, disgusting, shocking, despicable, immoral and tragic. The motto of the TV show is “We’re not bad people, we just did a bad thing!” This is not the Andy Griffith show that esteems morality, politeness, and genuine Christian goodwill toward our neighbor. No, it is the complete opposite. The story follows a disturbing family (the Rayburns) that owns a resort in the Florida Keys. Moses’ words above from Exodus describe this family. They reap what they sow. The bad parental traits are passed down to their children and even become worse in the next generation. These parents are the worst examples they could be for their children. They don’t teach their children right and wrong. They don’t teach them that there are consequences for our actions. They live with no regret, which just means that the TV show is full of self-loathing, shame and guilt. There isn’t a scene without someone in the family drinking to the point of inebriation or getting high. One of the parents even partakes in illegal drug use with their children. When one of their children lies, the father doesn’t rebuke him, but says, “everybody lies” as if it is expected. The children are paying for the sins of their parents. I guess that is the one good thing about this show; it confirms Biblical truth.

What is interesting about the Rayburn family is that their downfall all begins because their father can’t forgive one of his sons (Danny) for something he did when he was a teenager. This lack of forgiveness makes Danny the black sheep and later brings vengeance upon the whole family. Danny’s character is tragic. He wants to start over fresh, but the father and the family won’t give him the one thing that would change his life, forgiveness. Bloodline shows us a reverse picture of the Biblical story of the Prodigal Son. Have you ever thought about that story and wondered, what would have happened to the father and the rest of the family if he didn’t forgive the son that squandered his inheritance and returned in shame? What if the father didn’t restore his son? What if the father didn’t rebuke his ungrateful son? What if he let the hardness of his heart get the best of him? Well, if you must watch Bloodline you will see what destruction comes from a hardened heart. Forgiveness is the most powerful thing we can offer someone in life. It is the most beautiful thing that God offers us who repent of our sins, and desire a new and fresh start in life. God can use the power of forgiveness to change people into new creations. God’s forgiveness can even change the direction of entire families. Forgiveness is the power of God working life in the midst of brokenness. Are you holding on to un-forgiveness? Is your heart hardened toward someone? A spirit of discontent will only destroy you. Choose the path that God Himself chose for us. He has all the right in the world to hold our sins against us forever and not forgive us. But He didn’t do that. He sent us a peace offering, His Son, Jesus Christ. God chose to forgive us. It is that powerful gift that has changed our entire direction in life! Give the gift of forgiveness and do the same for someone in your life.

God Bless,
