Did You Miss The End Of The World

36 “But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son,[f] but only the Father. 37 As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. 38 For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark; 39 and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away. That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. 40 Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and the other left.41 Two women will be grinding with a hand mill; one will be taken and the other left.” – Matthew 24:36-41

Did you see the moon turn blood red this past Sunday? It was a beautiful spectacle when the earth passing between the sun and the moon, caused the sun’s rays to travel through our atmosphere, which in turn made the full moon turn an orange colored red. What was more interesting than the spectacle itself was all the claims that it might be the end of the world! This gives me an opportunity touch upon what the Bible actually says about the end of the Word.

In Matthew 24, the disciples asked Jesus about the end of the world, amongst other questions. Jesus gave us a clear picture of what will happen so we are prepared spiritually and are not fooled by false prophets. The first thing to remember is that there are signs that tell us we are nearing the end and then there are a series of events that take place at the moment Jesus Christ returns. In Matthew 24:4-14, Jesus describes the birth pains that are leading up to the end of the world. These are false prophets claiming to be world saviors, wars, rumors of wars, famines, earthquakes, Christian persecution, moral decay, a coldness between mankind, and the Gospel will be preached to all nations. All these are happening right now. You don’t need a blood moon to tell you that the world is going to end, we already see Jesus’ end times signs today. These shouldn’t make us afraid, but should be a wakeup call to be ready spiritually to meet Jesus. It could happen in our lifetime or thousands of years in the future. Jesus reminds us that no one knows the day or the hour.

In Matthew 24:27-31, Jesus tells us about the events that take place the moment Jesus returns. You can’t miss Him! They’ll be like lightening in the sky, which can be seen from East to West. These events of the end will be even more dramatic than the signs of the end; the sun will cease to shine, the moon will be darkened, the stars in the heavens will fall from the sky, the planets will be shaken out of their orbits, Jesus will appear in the sky with an army of angels, there will be a loud trumpet call, and all people will be gathered together in one place. Oh, and St. Paul reminds us that the dead will be raise to life again. You can’t and won’t miss it!

Don’t be deceived by those who predict the end of the world. Only God knows. Also, don’t mourn the end like those who practice evil. There is no fear for God’s people who are marked in Baptism with the blood of Jesus Christ. Just as the angel of death passed over the houses of the Israelites and spared them from judgement in Egypt because of the blood of the lamb, we too will receive and enjoy life eternal when Christ returns.

God Bless,
