Which Religion Is True?

One of the questions I am routinely asked as a pastor is; there are so many religions in the world today, which one is the right one?

They can't all be true because they all contradict each other.

You may have heard some people say that all religions are the same. They are all paths to the same God. The problem with this statement is that all religions actually contradict each other. Hinduism believes that there are millions of different gods, but Muslims believe there is only one. Which is it? Islam believes that there are five pillars that a follower must do to earn salvation, while Christianity states that no one can earn salvation by works because it is a free gift of faith in the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. Which one is right? In fact, when you study religions closely, you begin to notice that all religions cannot be the same. These contradictions actually help us test them to see which one is true.

History is helpful in testing whether or not a religion is true or false.

There are only a few religions that place their sacred scriptures within a historical context. The Hindu scriptures do not have a historical context, which means you cannot know whether it is true or false. Who can verify if the following is true? “Meditating on the lotus of your heart, in the center is the untainted; the exquisitely pure, clear, and sorrowless; the inconceivable; the unmanifest, of infinite form; blissful, tranquil, immortal; the womb of Brahma.” However, you can verify if the birth of Jesus in Luke 2 is true. "At that time the Roman emperor, Augustus, decreed that a census should be taken throughout the Roman Empire." Why is Mormonism false? It is because its history is false. Mormonism teaches that the Native Americans were the descendants of the Israelites. This history is obviously false because DNA evidence shows that the Indians came from Asia, not Israel. Why is Islam untrue? Its history states that Jesus didn't physically die on the cross. This is obviously wrong, because even the Roman historian Tacitus wrote that Jesus was physically crucified under the reign of Tiberius Caesar in his "Annals" of 116AD.

Which religions is true? It is the one that has placed its truth in a historical context and can be verified. The God in the Bible is the God of history and He has worked His salvation in history. You can know whether it is true or false.

“Praise be to the name of God for ever and ever; wisdom and power are his. He changes times and seasons; he deposes kings and raises up others." Daniel 2:21
