Two: What If Jesus Had Never Been Born?

“But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons.” –Galatians 4:4-5

What if Jesus had never been born? Our modern world wouldn’t be so modern! Today, science has given humanity vaccines, electricity, the Industrial Revolution, cars, airplanes, smartphones, computers, heart transplants and a much easier existence on planet earth. The media would have you think that science and Christianity are at odds, but in truth science came to us from a Christian Europe and from within the Christian faith tradition. While the Greeks investigated the natural world as early as 600 BC, they never fully developed science. Science didn’t develop from other religious belief systems either. Hinduism and Buddhism, for example, teach that the physical world is an illusion; it’s not even real! Islam teaches a fatalism and determinism that makes any attempt to change and transform the natural world essentially meaningless. In the last thousand years, 98 percent of the major technological, scientific and medical advances have taken place under Christendom or in Christian nations. Almost every branch of science that was created in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries came from people who believed in Jesus Christ and a Biblical worldview; that the physical universe was ordered by intelligence and therefore knowable through human discovery. They believed that their scientific discoveries were in the words of Johannes Kepler, “thinking God’s thoughts after Him.” The following is a list of Christians who by the grace of God created branches of science:

Louis Pasteur: Bacteriology, Johannes Kepler: Celestial Mechanics, Lord Kelvin: Energetics, Blaise Pascal: Hydrostatics, Charles Babbage: Computer Science, Lord Joseph Lister: Antiseptic Surgery, Robert Boyle: Chemistry, James Simpson: Anesthesiology, Matthew Fontaine Maury: Oceanography, Samuel Morse: Telegraphy and Sir Isaac Newton: Calculus and Dynamics.

Sir Isaac Newton, one of the greatest scientists to ever live, believed that one could even argue the existence of a Creator from the natural world. He wrote, “Atheism is so senseless. When I look at the solar system, I see the earth at the right distance from the sun to receive the proper amounts of heat and light. This did not happen by chance…this most beautiful system of sun, planets and comets could only proceed from the counsel and dominion of an intelligent and powerful Being…This being governs all things, not as the soul of the world, but as Lord over all; and on account of His dominion, He is wont to be called Lord God.” Yes, without Christ’s birth and the faith of Christians delving into the mysterious order of God’s creation, we would be living in a much different world.
